Dr. John Hartig
Detroit American Heritage River Navigator

Dr. Hartig whose job is "to navigate the bureaucracy, not the water" will discuss how structuring public/private partnerships around the stewardship of a river can stimulate a regional economy, build community capacity, and protect a unique natural asset for generations to come. He will discuss how actions, called Keystone Projects, evolved from an adaptive planning process that encouraged institutional cooperation on a watershed scale.

Roundtables will have discussion leaders from the Cuyahoga Valley project and representatives from other innovative models.

1) Creating Places for Quality Living
What sustainable elements make commercial and residential areas prime places to live and do business? What are the potential
catalysts? What partnerships are needed?

2) Future Energy
How can alternative energy sources transform a region?
What works and is happening now in Northeast Ohio? What needs to change to bring about sustainable energy resources in Northeast Ohio? Who needs to be involved?

3) Clean Water Economics
How can Northeast Ohio become a center for water-based business and research? What are our strengths? Where is the potential now? What are the next steps?

4) Regional Perspectives and Shared Boundaries
How can municipalities collaborate around land-use, infrastructure, and services to lower taxes, create enticements for business, and strengthen all communities involved? How do we create a new dialogue? How can the CVI model be used to build connections that move Northeast Ohio to a sustainable triple bottom line (economy, environment, social equity)?

5) A "Capital" Idea
What unconventional partnerships are needed to develop new ways to capitalize projects, encourage new business start-ups, and support research? How can principles of sustainability drive the process and create successful outcomes for the quality of life in Northeast Ohio?
